Thursday & Prompts for the first day of February....

Hi, all,

Period 1:
We discussed the novel briefly, and came up with predictions on how it might end. Current events were presented by most of the class, and then we reviewed vocabulary. Congrats to Jim, Faith and Joey for your first & second place (a tie) finishes. Great job during the review - almost everyone was on the board!

Period 3:
We worked on issue presentations - due on Monday.

Period 5:
Which is better: regular or dark chocolate? Mr. Goodbar or Krackle? How do you feel about homework?
The joys of persuasive writing... Can you be persuaded?
Does chocolate improve your creativity when essay writing?

Period 6:
We discussed Things Fall Apart, presented current events and assigned tasks for researching the Ibos.

Skiers, here is your prompt:

Who writes history? The conquerors or the conquered? What effect does this have on the veracity (truth) of recorded history? Can there ever be an undisputed account of history or is there always going to be two sides to the story?
Use examples to support your response.

Wednesday, January 30

A two hour delay modified some things, creating a very short period 1.

Period 1:
We reviewed vocabulary and also discussed last night's reading.
Questions to think about:
Do you think Young Ju is becoming too American? Do you think the conflict between having to be American at school and Korean (including only speaking Korean at home) would be hard?

Period 3:
We did very brief presentations about an item that is important to us: including family, spiders, friends, electronics and places.
Tomorrow we will begin researching an issue that is important and to present on Friday.

Period 5:
We responded to the prompt: "He who hesitates is lost." and also discussed a student essay: "Chicken Cutlets." Additionally we went over a brief handout on how to cite information.

Period 6:
Students completed a test on Greek tragedies and turned in their Antigone news articles.
Tonight we will begin reading Things Fall Apart.

All classes:
Don't forget current events due tomorrow!

See you tomorrow,

Mrs. Tyler

Did you know?

The other night I was driving home and NPR (National Public Radio) did an intriguing broadcast discussing Scarlett O'Hara, the issues of race, feminism and the message of survival. Apparently it was part of a series about fictional American characters "who have captured something about who we are. Our human frailties. Our need for comic relief. Our darkest corners." and perhaps inspired you. The challenge is to craft an essay, in 150 words or less, describing the character and why you believe he or she is important, compelling and/or provocative.

Points your essay might include: Why does the character intrigue you, specifically? What's universally appealing about him? What does she reveal about human nature? Did this character capture the psyche of a particular generation, inspire other characters or coin a phrase? Has this fictional person changed someone's life — maybe even your own?

I urge you to check out the blog: http://www.npr.org/blogs/incharacter/in_character_conversation/
it is really fascinating and includes characters from Jack Bauer (yes, of 24) to Holden Caulfield (Catcher in the Rye).
Who would you nominate? What would you say?

SPOILER ALERT: this will be an assignment coming soon to Mrs. Tyler's classroom.

Welcome to Week Two!

We have a busy week planned.

Period 1:
We will continue to explore An Na's novella, A Step from Heaven. There is a quiz scheduled for Tuesday and we will be finishing the novella on Friday.

On Monday we discussed the difference in expectations and roles for gender's and Young Ju's difficulty in finding a place to belong. On Tuesday (after the quiz), we will be exploring Young's voice by writing a diary entry about one of the events to date.

Period 3:
On Monday we presented our stereotype projects and began to think about an up-coming future presentation regarding colleges. Some of the schools selected include: Keene State and Colby Sawyer.

On Tuesday, we will discuss stage fright and how to cope with it.

Period 5:
On Monday, we talked about the importance of first lines and introductions. We shared responses from the prompt: "Can money buy happiness?"

On Tuesday, we will share one page papers with a peer using peer response sheets and discuss revision.

Period 6:
On Monday, we discussed Antigone's struggle and the role of moral dilemmas within the play and our own lives. We started notes on a Hero's Journey.

On Tuesday, we will review the Greek tragedies and prepare for the test on Wednesday. We will also continue our hero journey notes.

My website has been updated for those who need handouts.

See you in class,

Mrs. Tyler

PS - Prompt for all classes: Who has it easier: boys or girls? Explain your response.

Quote of the day (all classes)

Today's quote is:

Only the educated are free.
- Epictetus

Do you agree? Why or why not?

Block 1: We had the first vocabulary quiz. New words were distributed and need to be defined by Wednesday. We discussed how we relate and connect to Young Ju, as well as the latest events in her life: she's got a brother - he could grow up to be President (but she tells everyone at school he died), they have a home (not as nice as they like), her dad has two jobs (gardening and cleaning law offices), and Young Ju is supposed to be teaching her family what she learns in school.

Block 3: Stereotyping.... We all do it. What is its impact on us and our communication? Today we will begin creating fake bios.

Block 5: The first weekly paper is due. What are the parts of an essay? How do they function? Why do you need them all?
We will also write about someone or something that is important to us.

Block 6: Oh, Oedipus - what have you done?
We will discuss the conclusion of Oedipus Rex, prepare for adventures with Antigone, and take our first vocabulary quiz. The new list should be defined by Wednesday.

Don't forget, current events are due on Thursday!

Literature and more...

In English 12 we have started A Step from Heaven, a novella about a young Korean girl growing up in America and will be taking our first vocabulary quiz tomorrow. Today we reviewed vocabulary and discussed the reading to date.

Period 3: Today we shared our T-shirts and got to know one another a little better. Tomorrow we will be discussing stereotypes...and creating our own characters as we explore this phenomena.

Period 5: We worked on incorporating vocabulary words into our writing and discussed the importance of our writing having a purpose (and a point), as we read the short story: "Predator." Tomorrow we will be looking at introductions and one another's writings.

Period 6: We discussed Oedipus Rex - and how the characters were striving to prevent the prophecy from being realized; the three basic characteristics of Greek tragedy (sense of destiny, inevitability of events & a quest for justice); as well as discussing the seven "deadly" sins: wrath, pride, envy, lust, gluttony, sloth, and greed. In addition, we reviewed vocabulary.

Question of the day:
Is it usually better to learn through experience? Why or why not?

See you tomorrow,

A Step from Heaven Research

Good morning, English 12.

Today your task is to find:
  1. an article relating to Korean culture (arts, entertainment, music, religion, etc.),
  2. an article relating to Korean economics (jobs, employment, industries)
  3. an article relating to a significant event in Korean history
  4. What type of government is in power in Korea?
  5. Who is the current leader?
  6. The role of men and women in Korean culture
  7. How do the Koreans view the US? Each other (North & South)
Be careful to make sure you are getting information on the same Korea (there are two: North & South). I will assign which one your group will do.

Here are some websites to help you find this information.

NOTE: DO NOT use Wikipedia and make sure to cite your information using your Noodletools accounts. You will be expected to turn in a Works Cited page documenting where you accessed your information.

1. South Korea: http://www.korea.net/
2. South Korea: http://www.korea.edu/
3. South Korea: http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Korea.html
4. North Korea: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/kn.html
5. North Korea: http://www.korea-dpr.com/
6. North Korea: http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2792.htm
7. North Korea: http://www.kcna.co.jp/index-e.htm

Be prepared to discuss how these factors would impact an immigrant to our country.
