February 1st
Period 1:
We reviewed A Step from Heaven and took the weekly vocabulary quiz.
The test on the novel is on MONDAY.
We will be starting Cannery Row next week.
Period 3:
We will be working on the presentations for Monday.
Period 5:
We will be sharing essays and discussing how to make them more effective, as well as coming up with a revision plan on Monday.
Period 6:
We will be discussing Things Fall Apart, taking the weekly vocabulary quiz on Monday.

A two hour delay modified some things, creating a very short period 1.
Period 1:
We reviewed vocabulary and also discussed last night's reading.
Questions to think about:
Do you think Young Ju is becoming too American? Do you think the conflict between having to be American at school and Korean (including only speaking Korean at home) would be hard?
Period 3:
We did very brief presentations about an item that is important to us: including family, spiders, friends, electronics and places.
Tomorrow we will begin researching an issue that is important and to present on Friday.
Period 5:
We responded to the prompt: "He who hesitates is lost." and also discussed a student essay: "Chicken Cutlets." Additionally we went over a brief handout on how to cite information.
Period 6:
Students completed a test on Greek tragedies and turned in their Antigone news articles.
Tonight we will begin reading Things Fall Apart.

Welcome to Week Two!
We have a busy week planned.
Period 1:
We will continue to explore An Na's novella, A Step from Heaven. There is a quiz scheduled for Tuesday and we will be finishing the novella on Friday.
On Monday we discussed the difference in expectations and roles for gender's and Young Ju's difficulty in finding a place to belong. On Tuesday (after the quiz), we will be exploring Young's voice by writing a diary entry about one of the events to date.
Period 3:
On Monday we presented our stereotype projects and began to think about an up-coming future presentation regarding colleges. Some of the schools selected include: Keene State and Colby Sawyer.
On Tuesday, we will discuss stage fright and how to cope with it.
Period 5:
On Monday, we talked about the importance of first lines and introductions. We shared responses from the prompt: "Can money buy happiness?"
On Tuesday, we will share one page papers with a peer using peer response sheets and discuss revision.
Period 6:
On Monday, we discussed Antigone's struggle and the role of moral dilemmas within the play and our own lives. We started notes on a Hero's Journey.
On Tuesday, we will review the Greek tragedies and prepare for the test on Wednesday. We will also continue our hero journey notes.

Block 1: We had the first vocabulary quiz. New words were distributed and need to be defined by Wednesday. We discussed how we relate and connect to Young Ju, as well as the latest events in her life: she's got a brother - he could grow up to be President (but she tells everyone at school he died), they have a home (not as nice as they like), her dad has two jobs (gardening and cleaning law offices), and Young Ju is supposed to be teaching her family what she learns in school.
Block 3: Stereotyping.... We all do it. What is its impact on us and our communication? Today we will begin creating fake bios.
Block 5: The first weekly paper is due. What are the parts of an essay? How do they function? Why do you need them all?
We will also write about someone or something that is important to us.
Block 6: Oh, Oedipus - what have you done?
We will discuss the conclusion of Oedipus Rex, prepare for adventures with Antigone, and take our first vocabulary quiz. The new list should be defined by Wednesday.
Don't forget, current events are due on Thursday!
